Successful Completion of 5 Street Theatre Shows on Landslide Risk Awareness

As part of the ongoing initiative on Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) for Landslide Risk Mitigation, a total of five community-based street theatre performances titled “Nayan-Tara’s Tale” have been successfully completed in Ukhiya Upazila of Cox’s Bazar. The initiative is being implemented by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) with support from UNDP, and performed by the theatre unit of Unite Theatre for Social Action (UTSA). The performances were conducted across vulnerable communities in Rajapalong, Palongkhali, and Jaliapalong Unions, engaging local residents through participatory storytelling and interactive theatre. The play highlighted key issues such as environmental degradation, unsafe settlement practices, and the importance of community preparedness in reducing landslide risks. Empowering Students Through Therapeutic Theatre!

Today (10 September 2024), a therapeutic theatre session was held with the ninth-grade students of Firozshah City Corporation Girls High School, organized by UTSA in collaboration with Diakonia under the HEART project. During the session, the students actively participated and shared their experiences of facing various challenges in daily life and instances of bullying by peers. Using key tools of therapeutic theatre such as Playback Theatre and Sociodrama, the session focused on building coping skills by addressing difficult situations. Additionally, the "empty chair" method was used, allowing students to express their pent-up anger, frustration, and resentment. After the session, students expressed that the experience gave them the courage to voice their feelings, helped them learn to say no to negativity, and reinforced the value of staying aligned with positivity.

Youth Group Launches Heatwave Awareness Campaign

Bangladesh has been experiencing an increase in the frequency and intensity of heat waves, posing significant health risks to the population. In response, the youth group members of the HEART project organized an awareness campaign in Wierless Moor, Chattogram, to raise awareness about heatwave safety. They distributed fresh lemon juice to pedestrians, working people, students, rickshaw drivers, and van drivers, providing them with a refreshing way to stay hydrated. The campaign also focused on educating the community about protective measures against heat waves, such as using umbrellas, drinking water, and taking regular breaks in shaded areas. With the collaboration of UTSA and Diakonias, this initiative aims to reduce the risks associated with extreme heat and promote a safer environment for everyone.
